"Italy and Japan: the cooperation in Nuclear Physics and in Elementary Particle Physics"
GENERAL REMARKS
The collaboration between INFN and Japanese scientists covers the full domain of interest of INFN, ranging from the Nuclear Physics to the Physics of the Elementary Particles and of the Fundamental Interactions with related instrumentation, in particular Particle Accelerators. This collaboration is now making a very significative step with the Japanese participation to the neutrino oscillation search at the INFN Gran Sasso Laboratory in the neutrino beam from CERN. This search is aimed at making further progress in the understanding of the neutrino oscillation signal observed at SuperKamiokande.

The collaboration between INFN and Japan is also supported by official agreements:
- Agreement INFN-JSPS on 'Studies of Particle and Nuclear Physics including Theoretical and Experimental Research by means of advanced Accelerators'
- Collaboration Agreement KEK-INFN/LNF for Research in High Energy Physics
- Research Cooperation on Physics of Heavy Ions RIKEN-INFN
- Protocol concerning joint research activity on the development of accelerator technology INFN-Kyoto University
An agreement between INFN and the Nagoya University is under study.

In addition to the Symposium and coordinated with it, during the year Italy - Japan an exhibition will be organized by INFN in Japan.
